Strengthening compliance through Menu and Mealtime Assessments
Mar 23, 2026
Food and nutrition play a vital role in the health, dignity and wellbeing of older Australians. In aged care, mealtimes are more than a daily routine; they influence nutrition intake, social connection and overall quality of life.
Under Standard 6 Food and Nutrition of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, residential and in-home care providers must deliver nutritious, safe and appealing food that meets the individual needs and preferences of older people. This involves partnering with residents to provide choice in meals, drinks and dining experiences that support dignity, independence and quality of life. Structured menu and mealtime assessments play an important role in strengthening compliance while improving how food and nutrition are delivered in both residential and home care settings.
Demonstrating compliance under the Strengthened Standards
Beyond having a menu in place, providers must demonstrate that food services are planned, delivered and reviewed in a way that supports both nutritional outcomes and a positive dining experience.
This includes ensuring meals meet nutritional requirements, residents receive the correct meals for their dietary needs, and food services integrate with broader nutrition care processes. Providers must also maintain clear documentation, oversight and continuous improvement to demonstrate how food and mealtimes support safe and person-centred care.
What Menu and Mealtime Assessments evaluate
Conducted every 12 months by an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), a menu and mealtime assessment provides an independent review of nutrition care, menu planning and the overall dining experience.
Using M-Check, Nutrition Professionals Australia’s purpose-built digital assessment tool, Accredited Practising Dietitians evaluate menus and mealtime practices against the Aged Care Quality Standards, scoring performance across standards 1-6. This enables tracking of performance over time for individual homes and those within the same group as well as against the industry standard. The tool captures and verifies assessment data in one place while streamlining data entry, allowing greater focus on practical recommendations.
Key inclusions in the Menu and Mealtime Assessment:
- A visit to your organisation to meet with key catering, nursing and care staff
- Audit of meal serve sizes
- Review of menus and supporting documentation
- Review of nutrition policies and special diet procedure
- Identification of processes used to detect malnutrition and provide nutrition support
- Quantitative assessment of the nutrition provided to residents
- Evaluation of how food service integrates with broader nutrition care
At the conclusion of the assessment, providers receive a comprehensive report outlining practical recommendations aligned with best practice and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards. Written directly against the Standards, the report is designed to integrate easily into existing quality and governance processes.
Supporting Providers to strengthen Food and Nutrition
