Weight Management | Webinar

Join NPA’s Accredited Practising Dietitian's (APDs) on Tuesday 16th September from 1:30pm – 2:15pm (ACST) as they explore the complexities of weight management in older adults, including the risks of restrictive diets, and how to support healthy weight while maintaining dignity, choice, and nutritional adequacy.

At the conclusion of the webinar, you will:

  • Understand why restrictive practices are not appropriate in aged care settings.
  • Recognise the risks and benefits of obesity in older people, including impacts on mobility, breathing, bone density, and equipment use.
  • Learn how an older person can be both obese and malnourished if nutritional needs are not being met.
  • Understand why unintentional weight loss is never acceptable in older adults and always warrants investigation.
  • Learn when intentional weight loss may be clinically appropriate - and the role of the dietitian, GP, and allied health professionals in planning safe, slow weight loss (1-2kg/month max).
  • Explore evidence-based weight management strategies that prioritise protein intake and resident consent.
