Do you suspect that you have symptoms after eating wheat containing foods? Thousands of people avoid wheat and gluten because of food intolerance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and products made from these grains. For some people, gluten can cause severe digestive problems leading to nutrient malabsorption, anaemia and many serious health problems. Coeliac disease represents the most severe form of gluten intolerance and affects about 1% of the population. Another 5% of the population may have non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), which results in various gastrointestinal problems and other health issues. Many foods that contain gluten provide important fibre from whole grains and can be an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, so it is very important not to avoid gluten unnecessarily.
The new test involves a simple saliva test- your saliva sample is sent to the Nutrigenomix Lab and will give you some indication about the likelihood of gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. It is important to note that the test does not specifically diagnose coeliac disease- if it is positive you will need to follow up with your GP and/ or gastroenterologist.
You will require two appontments to see one of our Accredited Practising Dietitians. At the initial appointment, you will receive the testing kit, collect saliva and discuss the testing process and any nutrition related issues that you may have. Your sample will be sent to the Nutrigenomix Laboratory for analysis. If you have already had the Nutrigenomix Standard 7 Gene test then you will not need another sample- NutrigenomixTM can test the sample they already have on file.
You wil then have a second appointment to discuss the results and any dietary changes needed. You will also be asked to follow up with your General Practitioner if the test result is positive.
